There are plenty of stories out there about fans of celebrities who take things a little too far. If anyone knows what that’s like, it’s probably Justin Bieber, who has been fielding rabid fans for pretty much his entire career.
The singer recently attended the Met Gala with his wife of three years, Hailey Bieber. The pair were probably pretty excited about the event, especially since it coincided with their third anniversary. Unfortunately, it seems like fans of Justin were intent on making sure the event went sour, and they might have pulled it off.

In a TikTok that has been viewed over 1.5 million times, the fans are heard chanting “Selena, Selena, Selena,” as Hailey Bieber appears to fight back tears and Justin implores, “Don’t cry, don’t cry.” For those who are unfamiliar with the situation, “Selena” is a reference to Selena Gomez, who broke up with Justin nearly 10 full years ago.
That’s right: Entire tween children have been born and hit their first decade in the span of time that has elapsed between the end of that relationship and now. While there was some on-again/off-again after that, Justin dated several people in the time since. While Justin’s fans are known for being obsessive, this kind of behavior is downright toxic and intentionally harmful.
The question of how much celebrities really owe their fans is often asked; after all, it’s worth exploring. On one hand, the fans are largely responsible for making the careers of superstars; without a horde of screaming masses, it can be difficult to achieve such lofty heights. But on the other, celebrities are people, too — and they deserve to fall in and out of love with whomever they please.
This isn’t the first time Justin Bieber has dealt with obsessive fans. In 2016, Justin told fans that he would no longer take photos when spotted on the street because of how fans treat him: “If you happen to see me out somewhere know that I’m not gonna take a picture I’m done taking pictures. It has gotten to the point that people won’t even say hi to me or recognize me as a human, I feel like a zoo animal, and I wanna be able to keep my sanity.”
It certainly had to be jarring for Justin to attend such a huge event with his wife — whom he is very happily married to — by his side and to be confronted with such an ugly side of the fandom that has seemed to support him for so many years. Hailey’s cousin Ireland Baldwin confirmed as much when she said, “They’re one of the happiest and most in love couples I’ve ever gotten the chance to be around.”
